Strategic talent sourcing for rapid growth in remote regions

The situation 

Following a period of significant commercial success, one of our clients, a global pharmaceutical company we had supported for many years, saw their production output nearly triple. To accommodate this rapid growth, they needed to expand their team of biologics downstream process scientists from six to eleven within just two months. However, as downstream process scientists are highly sought after, the client was concerned that their site’s remote location might be less appealing compared to other opportunities in the field. As a result, they faced considerable challenges in sourcing top-tier talent and persuading candidates to relocate for the project. 

The solution 

We had already built a well-established database of downstream process scientists, which had been proactively developed by our recruitment team over several years. In addition to leveraging this resource, our consultants carried out targeted headhunting, drawing on recommendations from our extensive professional network. In our experience, exceptional professionals often knew others of similar calibre, and thanks to the strong reputation of our recruiters, candidates felt confident referring experienced and highly sought-after individuals to us. 

Through this combination of strategic headhunting and trusted referrals, we successfully engaged 50 relevant scientists within just three days. Given the high demand for their expertise, the next challenge was persuading them to relocate to a new city, something the company had previously struggled with during its internal recruitment efforts. By offering personalised support and clear guidance around relocation, including advice on housing, local amenities and setting realistic expectations, we were able to effectively address concerns and encourage candidates to seriously consider the move. 

The result 

  • We submitted nine high-quality CVs within one week of posting the roles. 
  • Four out of the five positions were successfully filled, with all four candidates receiving offers after their first interviews. 
  • A key factor in this success was the consultants’ ability to effectively and passionately promote the client’s brand and the exciting opportunities within their expanding projects.
